Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica)

Nettle leaf — when dried or properly wilted — is a deeply nourishing, mineral-rich tonic for horses. Traditionally used as a spring cleanser and daily nutritive support, nettle is valued for promoting healthy skin, circulation, joint comfort, and overall vitality.

Naturally high in iron and trace minerals, nettle supports horses from the inside out, often enhancing coat quality and encouraging dappling in healthy individuals.

  • Rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K

  • Provides iron, calcium, magnesium, silica, and folic acid

  • Supports healthy skin and a glossy coat

  • Encourages normal joint comfort and mobility

  • Assists circulation and cardiovascular function

  • Traditionally used to help with seasonal allergies and respiratory congestion

  • Offers metabolic and circulatory support, including for horses prone to laminitis

  • Average horse: 15–30 grams per day

  • Up to 50 grams daily when additional support is desired

Feeding Options

  • Mixed into daily feed

  • Offered free-choice alongside other herbs for self-selection

  • Prepared as an infusion and included in a water buffet, allowing horses to regulate their own intake

Introduce gradually and observe your horse’s preferences and response.

When to Use

  • As a spring tonic to support natural seasonal transitions

  • For ongoing coat, joint, and circulatory wellness

  • During times of environmental or seasonal allergy stress

Important Considerations

  • Monitor if your horse is on anti-hypertensive, anticoagulant, or diuretic medications

  • Consult your veterinarian before use in horses with complex medical conditions

Nettle leaf supports whole-horse wellness and works best as part of a thoughtful management plan that includes appropriate nutrition, movement, and access to forage and fresh water. It is not a replacement for veterinary care.
