Cleavers (Galium aparine)
Cleavers — sometimes called “clivers” or sticky-willy — is a gentle, nutrient-rich herb traditionally used to support the lymphatic system and healthy fluid balance in horses. Highly palatable and often enjoyed fresh in spring, cleavers are especially valued for horses prone to stocking up or “filled legs.”
This cooling, cleansing herb supports natural detoxification processes and promotes healthy skin and coat from the inside out.
Benefits
Supports healthy lymphatic circulation
Helps manage fluid retention and “filled legs”
Encourages normal kidney and urinary function
Provides natural silica to support coat and hair strength
Traditionally used during seasonal transitions for gentle metabolic support
Cleavers are often paired with Calendula (Marigold) to further enhance lymphatic support.
Feeding Options
Offered fresh (properly identified and harvested from untreated areas)
Dried and mixed into daily feed
Prepared as an herbal infusion (tea) and added to feed
Included in a water buffet, allowing horses to self-select
Offered free-choice alongside other supportive herbs
Introduce gradually over 5–7 days and observe your horse’s individual response.
Important Considerations
Cleavers are mildly diuretic in nature
Use thoughtfully in horses with severe or complex metabolic conditions
Monitor intake for horses sensitive to higher natural sugar levels in fresh spring growth
Consult your veterinarian when adding herbs to horses with chronic health concerns
Cleavers are particularly helpful for horses that spend time stalled, experience seasonal fluid retention, or benefit from gentle lymphatic support. As with all herbs, they work best as part of a balanced management plan that includes appropriate movement, nutrition, and access to forage and fresh water. They are not a replacement for veterinary care.
